god dosen't make junk
I read this book to my A.D.H.D. son before bed time tonight and I saw a stiring of compassion and understanding that I have not seen for awhile. I read the library's book and he actually said " I wish I had this book." The ideas in the back and discussion questions where the iceing on the cake. I loved that this book reinforced god as our creator at a level for kids to understand.

Bonding and the Missionary Task
Published in Paperback by Lingua House (1982)
Authors: E. Thomas Brewster and Elizabeth S. Brewster
Average review score:

Warning: Book may be Life Changing
An excellent two in one little book- Bonding and the Missionary Task at one end; flip it over and you get Language Learning is Communication is Ministry.

Bonding looks at the similarities between the bonding a child goes through and that the missionary has as he or she tries to contextualize themselves within a new culture. The Brewsters make a powerful argument that an effective missionary needs to forsake their own culture and leave the classic mission-station approach, and immerse themselves in the new society. Through the use of empiracal example and reasoning they lay out how our approach recapitulates the type of Christ- or at least should. If only more people read this book the world would be different.

Language Learning looks at similar issues- how our goal should be not to learn a language, but to build relationships. In the process of building relationships, we gain another goal of learning the heart language of the people far better than you ever could through study. Conincident with this is the importance of depending on the people you are trying to relate to- we are not supposed to be supermen or gods, but human, fallible, and relational. Language-learning is not "a hurdle" to ministry- it is an essential ingredient *within* it. As with the other half of the booklet, the Brewsters consistently return us to the actions of Christ for the model of what effective missiology is. He came not to be served, but to serve.

A book of devotions
Published in Unknown Binding by Smythe ()
Author: Elizabeth
Average review score:

A fascinating look at the private life of Elizabeth I
If you have a keen interest in the Elizabethan era, this little book is a must have. (My copy came as a special order from Amazon.co.uk)

The exquisite description of Elizabeth's tiny devotion book from which the prayers were taken is worth the price alone. Read all about the little gold and ruby encrusted volume in the forward by Rev. Canon J. P. Hodges.

Or, find treasures of a less earthly nature in the prayers written by the Queen in her own hand. These prayers were written in English, French, Italian, Latin and Greek. Not to worry, all the prayers have been translated into English by Rev. Adam Fox, so that all may read and reflect on this most interesting side of the life and times of Elizabeth I.

The Book of Good Love (Everyman's Library (Paper))
Published in Paperback by Everyman (October, 1999)
Authors: Juan Ruiz, Elizabeth Drayson MacDonald, and Mario A. Di Cesare
Average review score:

Sacred and Profane
A wonderful and too often overlooked masterpiece of the middle ages. Written by a clergyman, the Archpriest of Hita, who questions the distinction, if there is any, between sacred and profane love. Through a loose narration of often-time hilarious tales which recount the archpriest's amourous adventures, the author questions the notions of the sign, meaning, morality and love. Ultimately it represents a meditation on the religious notions of salvation and sin. The book in fact was written in part as a love manual for those who wish to experience sexual pleasure (through a reading of the book) but do not want to fall into the mortal sin of fornication. _The Book of Good Love_ was also instrumental in Fernando de Rojas' construction of his masterpiece, _La celestina_.

The Bookcase Ghost: A Storyteller's Collection of Wisconsin Ghost Stories
Published in Paperback by Midwest Traditions (October, 1996)
Authors: Elizabeth Matson and Stuart Stotts
Average review score:

a strong collection of regional stories, ready for telling.
If you're looking for good ghost stories, with the ring of authenticity and the flavor of Wisconsin, this is a great book. The stories work well out loud. They're good ghost stories, not violent or bloody, but suspenseful and mysterious. There's also a good section at the end on telling stories, as well as notes on where the stories come from.

Border Life: Experience and Memory in the Revolutionary Ohio Valley
Published in Paperback by Univ of North Carolina Pr (May, 1998)
Authors: Elizabeth A. Perkins and John Dabney Shane
Average review score:

Excellent background book for genealogy
I bought this book because I understood that a few of my ancestors were quoted in it; as a genealogist, I look for every mention of my ancestors possible! But this book brought home the staggering (to me, I never said I was smart) fact that not all conflict between settlers and Native Americans took place on the plains. Many, many conflicts took place right here in the midwest, in Ohio, Michigan, etc. And this book provides an excellent description of the people and events of this period of settlement. It adds a dimension to my research, and is an fascinating study.

Borrowed Coats
Published in Hardcover by Hanging Loose Pr (2001)
Author: Wilma Elizabeth McDaniel
Average review score:

An Authentic American Voice
You will find in this collection of poems the heart and soul of America. Not the America that is offered in the self-indulgent, polished prose of the depressed, academic elite, but rather an America captured in a life lived simply and honestly. McDaniel's unadorned observations of the people and experiences around her speak deeply about the human heart; telling us things about love, fear and existance that more contrived poetry overlook. You will learn something about people driven by circumstance to seek meaning in humble digs, and you will--if you listen carefully enough--learn something about yourself, too. Enter this book with the advice of my Okie grandaddy, "keep your eyes pealed back, and you might just learn yourself something."
